The RM 75-01 Flying Tourbillon Sapphire draws inspiration from the ocean’s beauty, mystery and power
When founder Richard Mille launched his eponymous label 22 years ago, his goal was to create timepieces that combine advanced technology with a contemporary aesthetic, made for athletes and sports enthusiasts alike. This relentless pursuit of innovation is seen in the RM 75-01 Flying Tourbillon Sapphire, a timepiece that was perhaps inspired by the Richard Mille Cup, an annual event featuring historic yacht races for enthusiasts of classic boats.
The water-themed connection is reflected in the clear sapphire case, reminiscent of ocean waves, while the sea-green rubber strap represents the seabed and tropical beaches. Two additional versions feature coloured sapphire casebacks, one in a lilac pink shade, reminiscent of twilight on South Sea, and another in deep sapphire blue that represents the ocean’s depths.

Choosing a sapphire case was a deliberate one as the designers wanted a special movement made for this highly durable material. Known for its exceptional hardness, sapphire is resistant to scratches and everyday wear, making it highly valued in horology.
As Cécile Guenat, Director of Development and Creation, explains, “Using sapphire in multiple colours enabled us to craft multiple identities. Water, as a symbol of clarity and movement, guided our exploration of the many facets of coloured sapphire.”
Complementing this colour palette, each watch has a bezel that combines a rubber gasket with a domed cabochon of precious stone, such as white agate or intense pink opal. Crafted in red gold and set with diamonds, this attention to detail is found in the flange that frames the movement within the case. Beyond aesthetics, the transparent sapphire case displays an intricate tourbillon movement at its centre, showing off technical mastery with a pleasing visual.
For the RM 75-01 Flying Tourbillon Sapphire, the transparency highlights the architecture of the calibre, which features a flying tourbillon and flying barrel. Without a dial, the mechanics are on full display.
There are three distinct versions of the RM 75-01 Flying Tourbillon Sapphire. Two, limited to 10 pieces each, feature unique hues of coloured sapphire inspired by aquatic landscapes. The third, made entirely from clear sapphire, is issued in a limited edition of 15.
