Editor’s Letter: The Best Of The Best Issue, November 2023

Welcome to our Best of the Best issue

We’ve made the list and checked it many times. Having done so, the only conclusion that we can all agree on is this: that Robb Report’s annual Best of the Best edition—a signature issue that has celebrated the ultimate in chart-topping material pursuits in fine living since 1989—is far from an exercise in objectivity. It is the opposite of equal judgement. And it is not a bad thing at all.

In the motoring category, for example, the muscular and regal Range Rover Sport gets our vote for the Best All-Terrain vehicle. The dashing Ferrari Daytona SP3, inspired by the company’s sports prototypes from the 1960s, takes the crown for Best Supercar. In the aviation space, the record-breaking Gulfstream G800, which can fly for 14,816km with a long-range cruise speed of Mach 0.85—an unprecedented industry standard–wins the Large-Cabin Jet category.

Elsewhere, our Jewellery of the Year nod goes to Hermès’s Collier Chaînes d’ombre, a white gold link necklace paved with diamonds, alongside gradated black spinels and blue sapphires.

But who is to say, for instance, that the aural emissions and handling of this year’s Best Electric Car winner is the most satisfying? Or that the iconic Louis XIII Cognac, one that so many connoisseurs also love, is truly the most delectable?

The answer, even though it sounds a bit counter-intuitive since it is this esteemed publication that has compiled the list, has to be “I’ll have to see for myself”.

“We This year’s winners across the categories of motoring, yachts, spirits, timepieces, jewellery and more are carefully deliberated and selected by a team of industry experts and journalists who have amassed plenty of experience, knowledge and passion in their respective fields to make their judgment calls. But it doesn’t mean that we are unbiased—especially when the enjoyment of luxury, when taken to extremes, runs contrary to level-headed assessments.

And that is why we also always allow room for rumination and debate. It is truly one of the most exciting and pleasurable outcomes of making such lists.

Enjoy the issue.
