In a sport where every second matters and where victory hinges on the unforgiving interplay between man and machine, it’s easy to see why motor racing has long been entwined with the world of fine watchmaking

On paper, it’s a symbiotic relationship made in heaven. Yet, while the parallels between the racetrack and the watch workshop are often celebrated, not every partnership lives up to the promise. Too often, watch collectors are asked to buy into the fantasy of the ‘Formula One-inspired’ timepiece; models that, beneath the bravado and branding, reveal little more than cosmetic tweaks to an existing watch that has been hastily adorned with a team’s livery or a championship logo. H. Moser & Cie., for one, is intent on ensuring that its partnership with Alpine Motorsports—covering all aspects of the latter’s programme, including the BWT Alpine F1 Team, Alpine Endurance Team, Alpine Academy, Rac(H)er, and other projects—is “never going to be just a marketing ploy”.

Edouard Meylan, CEO of H. Moser & Cie., says one of his fondest memories growing up was racing in Alpine cars with his father. Having perceived Alpine as the “underdogs of rally racing”, Meylan sees a lot of his brand in the motorsport company.

As a fiercely independent watch brand that constantly punches above its weight in an arena dominated by brands with centuries-old legacies, H. Moser & Cie. not only feels deeply aligned with Alpine’s spirit, but also seeks to pursue a partnership that is built on genuine collaboration.

Under the hood

H. Moser & Cie. and Alpine Motorsports inked their partnership in 2024 and promptly broke ground with the Streamliner Cylindrical Tourbillon Skeleton Alpine Limited Edition and Streamliner Alpine Limited Edition Pink Livery—two commemorative models that express both companies’ penchant for precision engineering, uncompromising performance, and high octane style.

This year, both brands delve deeper into their partnership with two collaborative creations: the Streamliner Alpine Drivers Edition and the Streamliner Alpine Mechanics Edition. Sold together and limited to 200 sets, the watches are conceived in close consultation with Alpine Motorsports, the former champions chronograph craftsmanship, while the other embraces the future, integrating advanced connected technology in a bold, digital-first offering.

As the name suggests, the Streamliner Alpine Drivers Edition channels the desire of Alpine drivers to have a wristwatch that is the equivalent of their single-seaters. The result? A top-drawer automatic chronograph that goes full throttle in both form and function.

At the core of the watch is a skeletonised version of the legendary AgenGraphe calibre, developed by movement specialist, Agenhor. Framed by a 42.3mm steel case with blue PVD treatment, the watch appears as if a bonnet is lifted from its dial and you can see everything: gears, bridges, wheels—the skeletonised movement artfully sculpted and laid bare for close inspection.

Alpine’s drivers also had a hand in shaping the aesthetics, from the powerful blue-and-white colour palette that nods to speed and Alpine’s racing DNA to the dial’s architectural lines that echo the triangulated suspension arms of an F1 chassis. Look closer and you’ll spot a central bridge shaped like a helmet. The skeletonised rotor mirrors the Alpine A110’s wheel rim.

On the other hand, the Streamliner Alpine Mechanics Edition in a 42.6mm steel case, limited to 500 pieces, is built together with the Alpine pit teams. Quite possibly the world’s first luxury smartwatch built as a bona fide tool for an F1 team, the timepiece is designed to streamline communication, sharpen timing, and squeeze every last thousandth of a second out of a race weekend.

When fired up, the watch’s sleek black screen calls up a vast amount of data at your fingertips—GMT with a country selector, split-seconds chronograph, perpetual calendar, and a bespoke F1 mode that tracks the countdown to lights out and flags key moments across the racing calendar.

It is powered by a state-of-the-art connected movement with a battery that lasts up to a year in time-only mode or across six Grand Prix weekends in full connected function. And in a clever melding of two worlds, the time is displayed by analogue hands, set atop a small domed Funky Blue fume dial in transparent lacquer—an H. Moser & Cie. signature.

By diving deep into each other’s worlds, H. Moser & Cie. and Alpine Motorsports show that true magic can happen when both parties bring more than just logos to the table. Available at Cortina Watch, The Streamliner Alpine Drivers and Mechanics editions are collaborative watches that don’t just look the part, but earn their place in their respective brand’s story.
