From Belgium with love

King Leopold ll, the second king of Belgium once said, “The nation of Rubens must be as great in its art, as in its commerce and industry.” His aim was to push local brands with exceptional heritage and quality onto an international stage. In 1883, he awarded the house of Delvaux with the title of Royal Warrant Holder of the Court of Belgium, recognising the brand for its timeless and understated fine leather goods. Since then, the brand has been the incumbent recipient of the award, which is given out once every five years.

Delvaux, founded in 1829, trains its craftsman to work on individual pieces from start to end. The design has remained largely unchanged, keeping to its classic roots. Apart from Delvaux’s name that can only be seen under the flaps of the bags, those not in the know would be hard pressed to identify the brand.

Since 2013, the brand has been aggressively expanding in Asia, setting up shop in Japan, China, Korea, and most recently, Singapore. Located in Scotts Square, the 125-sqm boutique is coloured in warm shades of cream and taupe. A smaller showroom, Box in a Box, sits in the middle of the store, showcasing the latest exotic leather bags. To cater to Asia’s preference for vibrant hues, the boutique also displays a selection of handbags in playful colours such as rose indien and bleu de prusse.
